What Causes Fluorescent Light Tube Covers to Become Yellow?

Fluorescent tube covers play an important role in protecting lighting systems in commercial environments. They help contain broken glass if a lamp fails, improve safety and can extend the lifespan of lighting installations.

However, over time, many businesses notice that their fluorescent light tube covers or fluorescent light covers begin to turn yellow. Why does this happen, and should you be concerned?

Natural ageing of plastic

Most fluorescent tube covers are manufactured from polycarbonate or similar durable plastics. While these materials are designed to withstand daily use, prolonged exposure to light, heat and environmental conditions can gradually cause the plastic to discolour.

Ultraviolet (UV) rays, whether from natural sunlight or certain types of lighting, slowly break down the material’s surface, leading to the familiar yellow appearance.

Heat can accelerate discolouration

Commercial lighting often operates for long periods every day. The heat generated by fluorescent lamps can speed up the ageing process of the tube cover, particularly in busy workplaces such as warehouses, factories, and commercial kitchens.

Dust, grease and airborne contaminants

Not all yellowing is caused by the material itself. In restaurants, industrial premises and manufacturing facilities, grease, smoke, dust and airborne pollutants can build up on the surface of the tube light cover, creating a yellow or dull appearance.

Why replacement matters

Yellowed covers don’t just affect appearance. As the material becomes discoloured, it can reduce the amount of light passing through, making workspaces appear darker and potentially increasing energy costs if additional lighting is needed.

If the cover has also become brittle or cracked, it may no longer provide the level of protection expected from a quality shatterproof light cover.

Consider upgrading your lighting

If your fluorescent lighting is reaching the end of its life, it may also be worth considering modern LED tube light fittings.

LED systems offer improved energy efficiency, longer service life and reduced maintenance, while new protective covers can restore brightness and improve safety.
